NYC SHSAT Discovery Program Guide: Qualifying Score Band & Eligibility Criteria
The NYC DOE reserves 20% of seats at each of the eight testing Specialized High Schools for disadvantaged students who score just below the direct-admission cutoff score and successfully complete a summer enrichment program.
- A student must meet both individual income/program eligibility criteria AND attend a middle school with an Economic Need Index (ENI) of 60% or higher (or qualify under ENL/foster/temporary housing provisions).
- Only students who score within the designated Discovery score window (just below the lowest direct-admission cutoff) are invited to apply in March.
- Students who score at or above a school’s direct cutoff receive an immediate seat offer regardless of Discovery status.
Families who may qualify for the Discovery Program should still rank all Specialized High Schools they would happily attend in true preference order on their fallSHSAT registration.
Aiming for the direct-admission score target (515–570+) remains the safest strategy, with the Discovery Program serving as a valuable secondary safety net.
